ICON’s dropped another gear bomb on the motorcycle industry with their Fall line-up of new stuff that you’ll start to buy this fall and next spring. ICON’s done it again with some killer looking jackets, boots, pants and gloves for men and women.

The ICON Brawnson jacket fits the classic bill look and the Sidewinder version of it is color coded for the American VTWIN market and we’re totally buying it.

ICON has improved with age. The company has refined its tools and sharpened it knives over the years, to the point that, if you set the ICON package next to a lot of other major brands, ICON has their shit together, so speak. Others, not so much.

Focused, purpose built, flashy, not whimpering in the corner, ICON feels at home. And it should because it’s a brand designed for and in the American United States. Which, as an American myself, makes me feel quite good, that we still know how to make some kick ass stuff, particularly motorcycle clothing, though these are still labeled “imported”, meaning – made in China. Still, the finished product is distinctly American and something Im happy to see disseminated and exported around the world.

In fact, if I were any other brand of motorcycle clothing, I might be shaking in my boots about things like these boots here- the ICON Reign Waterproof Boots can easily go head to head with any major european waterproof boot for a few dollars less.

Of the five ICON helmets to hit the stage this year, I like the ICON Guardian Airframe helmet the most and motostrano.com hopes to sell lots of them.

ICON says

“Icon wanted to honor the heroic men and women in the United States Armed Forces with a symbolic helmet graphic. Illustrated by Tanner, the depicted Guardian Angel supports our soldiers in her unwavering vigilance. Proudly carried by Icon’s flagship helmet shell – the Airframe – the Guardian is a sincere and heartfelt thank you to our brave and heroic American soldiers from a grateful American motosports company. “

The ICON Sacred Tall Boots – a new womens boot from ICON based on the previously released low version.

The ICON VICTORY HARD LUCK jacket is a limited edition thrill-seekers leather jacket full of attitude and detail. For sale for $777

The ICON Brawnson Overpants are a new overpant from ICON. All season use.

ICON PDX Waterproof Gloves are a low cost water proof glove for you wet weather riding pleasure.

ICON Women’s Heartbreaker jacket. Killer looks. Cool patches. Nice price.

Alpinestars keeps it’s brand and product fresh by releasing large quantities of product revisions and new introductions at least twice per year. It’s just one of the ways that Alpinestars ensures that it’s brand is synonymous with innovation and cutting edge motorcycle protection.

Which is what it is. This isn’t high-tech fashion. It’s body armor, disguised as a garment. A boot is really a foot brace. A jacket is a second skin, a back protection device, elbow and shoulder guards. A helmet is a shark cage. The fact that they have ccolor and design elements is really secondary to their core intent: body protection.

And it’s body armor shielding us from impact with things the road or trees, but also with the elements and the environment that is created at high velocity. At 120 MPH, the human body requires special protection to prevent it from getting worn out from fatigue, temperature, elements, atmosphere, matter.

The body isn’t built to travel faster than a couple miles per hour. It certainly isn’t designed to crash at any speed, let alone 40 mph.

Alpinestars gear protects the body from these things and keeps its vital signs running at proper levels in adverse conditions.

New, for 2011:

I’d ride these boots down up to the Lost Coast, just as much as I’d rock them down the 101 to a meeting at Google. Great boot, good looks, nice price.

Short boots, perhaps like short skirts, have never been so popular. Virtually all moto boot makers have a vibrant line of short boots available to the street bike rider, commuter and around-towner. Alpinestars, ICON, Gaerne, Joe Rocket, Shift, all have a lot of short riding boots to choose from.

Among the boots we like most there is the SIDI Streetburner boot. A short boot with an obvious racing pedigree. Like many of the more sport oriented shorter boots, the Streetburner looks like a standard tall booth that’s been chopped down.

Sidi says: “SIDI Streetburner Boots! Sidi, continuously researching new technological solutions to enhance rider safety, is proud to present the Streetburner boot. With Sidi’s great style, feel, support and quality there are no finer performance off road boots in the world.”

The Streetburner looks like a low Vertigo. It has many of the adjustment and replacement features of the Vertigos with a low cut design. There’s the external ankle brace system and the “Tecno-II” buckle system for adjustability.
The Burner also has bolt on replaceable, adjustable and aerodynamic nylon scuff pads on the toe as well as a removable arch support.

The Streetburner is intended for street duty. It’s a good commuting boot for the sport bike rider, a boot you can take on a leisure/sport weekend ride. Like all shorter boots, the burner has less true ankle support and no shin support.

Worthy competitors to the Steetburner worth looking at are the Alpinestars SMX-2 Boots and the Gaerne Jet Boot.

The SIDI Street Burner, is available at Motostrano.com.

I’ll be honest, I’m not a big fan of ICON’s footwear products. Over the years, I think the idea of all the products have been great, but the final outcome in daily use usually has some major flaws that, if I wore them, would hinder me from becoming a repeat customer. This is coming from a shop that sells the best in motorcycle footwear produts, Alpinestars, SIDI, Gaerne, etc.

Icon typically takes a non-moto boot idea, like a work boot, or girly high heels, or timberland style high tops and modifies the idea to make a moto boot. Glue on a latch buckle here, spray on some no-slip stuff there, jam in some steel in the sole and away you go, preto-moto-boot-o.

But most motorcyclists are picky about what they put on their feet. Boots have to look ok, but more importantly they really gotta feel good and this is all in order to justify wearing them at all.

Which brings us to the category of the ‘do it all’ boot. The do-it-all boot is a ‘motorcycle boot’ that you can ride to work in and wear all day. You can hop off your bike and into a meeting or onto a forklift and not be out of place. This boot really doesn’t exist, actually. This boot is usually a low cut boot that comes close to looking like a regular shoe or walking boot.

Previous boot models like the Superduty 1 and 2 were just too damn stiff to wear AT ALL, let alone on or off the bike.

The new Icon Accelerant Waterproof Boots look promising. Simple looking. Akin to some kind of hiking boot. Basic coloring, small logos. A buckle that will hide under your pants. Laces for adjustability. Waterproof! And they are not heavy! Reasonably comfortable too. Good feeling leather.

Absolutely a wear all day boot. A good idea for a commuting boot. A decent long distance touring boot.

Available at Motostrano.com
